Mombasa to Lamu: Flight, Bus and Boat Options

The easiest way from Mombasa to Lamu is a direct flight from Moi International Airport to Manda Airport, followed by a short boat transfer to Lamu Town or Shela. The budget route is a bus or coach from Mombasa to Mokowe on the mainland, then a local boat across the channel. A private road transfer uses the same Mokowe and boat sequence.

There is no practical scheduled public ferry carrying tourists all the way from Mombasa to Lamu. When a booking page says “bus to Lamu”, the road vehicle normally ends on the mainland. When an airline says “Lamu”, the aircraft lands on Manda Island. In both cases, the last useful leg is by boat.

Allow more time than the headline journey duration. Flights can move, road journeys can stretch, and the passenger still has to find the correct boat and reach the final accommodation.

Options at a glance

Option Main legs Sensible door-to-door allowance Best for Main compromise
Direct flight Mombasa hotel to MBA, flight to LAU, boat to hotel About 3 to 5 hours Short trips, couples, families and travellers avoiding a long road day Variable airfare and baggage limits
Scheduled coach Mombasa bus office to Mokowe, boat to Lamu or Shela About 8 to 11 hours Budget travellers comfortable with a long journey Stops, terminal uncertainty and less luggage control
Private vehicle Mombasa to Mokowe, private or shared boat onward About 7 to 10 hours Groups, families and travellers wanting planned stops High vehicle cost and still no road onto the island
Mombasa to Malindi, then onward Road to Malindi, separate bus or flight connection Usually a full travel day unless connections align Combining Malindi with Lamu Two bookings and missed-connection risk
Long-distance sea charter Private vessel from Mombasa Unpredictable Specialist expedition with professional planning Not a normal transfer; weather, safety and cost make it unsuitable for most visitors

The times are planning allowances, not timetables. Check the live airline or bus inventory for the date, and confirm the final boat separately.

Route 1: fly from Mombasa to Manda Airport

The air route begins at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, code MBA, and ends at Manda Airport, code LAU. Manda Airport is not in Lamu Old Town. It is on Manda Island across the channel, so a boat transfer remains necessary.

Current search inventory can include direct service by Skyward Express and, on some dates or sales systems, other domestic airlines or itineraries involving Malindi or Nairobi. Do not assume a daily pattern will remain unchanged. Search the exact travel date on the airline's own site and compare the flight number, stops and total elapsed time. Starting in the capital instead? Use the separate Nairobi to Lamu flights guide to avoid confusing Wilson Airport with JKIA.

One live Skyward booking result checked for this guide showed a direct Mombasa-to-Lamu flight of about 40 minutes from KES 4,550 per person. That is a dated example for one displayed service, not a promise for another day. A fare can change with demand, baggage, taxes, ticket conditions or route availability.

What the flight price must include

Cost item Question to ask Why it matters
Airfare Is this the final one-way fare including taxes? A search teaser may not be the checkout total
Checked bag What weight and dimensions are included? Small aircraft can enforce limits carefully
Cabin bag Is a wheeled bag accepted or only a small soft bag? Storage may be limited
Change or cancellation Is the ticket flexible and what fee applies? Weather or earlier itinerary changes can matter
Mombasa airport transfer Price per vehicle from your hotel North-coast traffic can add time
Manda boat Included by the hotel or paid separately? The flight does not put you at the hotel
Porter Included at the airport and landing jetty? Useful with children or heavy luggage

Book the airport boat before departure. Give the hotel the flight number, passenger names, mobile number and luggage count. Ask who will hold the sign at Manda, whether the boat is private or shared, whether life jackets in suitable sizes are carried, and where you will land.

Old Town properties normally use a town jetty. Shela properties arrange a landing nearer Shela. A hotel on Manda or farther in the archipelago needs its own route. “Lamu transfer” is therefore not a complete description.

Route 2: bus or coach from Mombasa to Mokowe

The overland route travels north through Kilifi and Malindi, continues towards Garsen and Witu, and ends at Mokowe, the mainland gateway for Lamu Island. The journey is often described as Mombasa to Lamu even though the bus cannot drive into Lamu Old Town.

Operators and sales pages associated with this corridor include Tawakal and current Modern Coast or Mash Poa listings. Service changes are common enough that the brand name alone is not proof. Confirm that the bus runs Mombasa to Mokowe on your exact date, where it boards, whether a change occurs, and where it leaves passengers relative to Mokowe jetty.

Tahmeed is a familiar coastal bus company and its website lists Mombasa among its destinations. During this guide's research, its public page did not provide a reliable, bookable direct Mombasa-to-Mokowe timetable. Do not go to a Tahmeed office assuming it serves Lamu that day. Ask the company directly or choose an operator showing the actual route in live inventory.

Current fare examples, not fixed prices

Listing checked Displayed one-way fare Displayed duration What to verify
Modern Coast Mombasa to Lamu route card KES 2,000 economy; KES 2,500 business Not enough to plan the day Live departure, actual operator and Mokowe drop-off
Mash Poa route listing KES 2,200 7 to 9 hours Whether booking is issued directly or completed by an agent
Another Mash Poa fare page KES 1,700 regular to KES 2,300 VIP Route card only Which fare appears at checkout for the date
Tawakal official portal Route selector includes Mombasa and Lamu Date dependent A result must exist before paying

These September 2026 observations show why a single permanent “bus price” would mislead. Take a screenshot of the itinerary and final fare at payment. Confirm the operator's official phone number independently before paying by mobile money.

Questions for the bus office

  • Is the final road stop Mokowe bus stage, Mokowe jetty or another Lamu mainland point?
  • Is the service direct, and what towns or vehicle changes are planned?
  • What is the reporting time and exact map pin in Mombasa?
  • Does the ticket include a boat, or is the boat paid separately?
  • Is large luggage placed in a locked hold and is a receipt issued?
  • Are seats allocated, and what does “VIP” actually change?
  • Are daytime and overnight services both operating?
  • What happens if the bus reaches Mokowe after the usual shared-boat period?

For most international visitors, a daytime departure is easier to manage. It reduces the chance of handling the unfamiliar Mokowe-to-island transfer late at night. It also makes the route and stops easier to understand.

The Mokowe-to-Lamu boat crossing

At Mokowe, passengers transfer from road to water. Shared local boats and private boats connect the mainland with Lamu Town; boats can also continue to Shela by arrangement. The crossing itself can be short, but waiting, loading and the onward landing extend the process.

Guide pages checked during research showed historic or indicative shared-boat figures from roughly KES 100 to KES 300 per person and private-boat figures around KES 1,000, but these should not be treated as current official tariffs. Ask for the fare before boarding, state the destination, and confirm whether the charge is per passenger or for the whole boat.

Boat question Safe planning response
Which jetty? Ask your hotel for the named Mokowe meeting point and destination landing
Shared or private? Shared is cheaper; private reduces waiting and can suit a group
Life jackets? See enough serviceable jackets for adults and children before leaving
Luggage? Keep documents, medicine and electronics in a water-resistant day bag
Night arrival? Pre-arrange a known boat and hotel representative rather than negotiating after arrival
Rough conditions? Follow the licensed operator's judgement and do not pressure a departure
Shela rather than town? Agree the direct destination and full price before boarding

Do not board an overloaded boat or accept a trip without suitable safety equipment. Marine conditions and visibility matter more than a promised schedule.

Private road transfer

A driver can collect you from a Mombasa hotel, airport or SGR terminus and drive to Mokowe. This can be more comfortable than a coach for three or four people, especially with children or luggage. It also allows planned food and toilet stops. It does not eliminate the boat.

Ask the company to quote the vehicle, passenger and bag capacity, fuel, driver costs, route, stops, one-way or return basis, and waiting policy. Confirm whether the driver hands you to a named boat operator at the jetty. A quote “to Lamu” must say whether the boat and porter are included.

Avoid committing to an artificially short road time. Traffic leaving Mombasa, stops, weather, construction and checks along the northern section can change the day. Build the itinerary around arrival before dark rather than around the most optimistic map estimate.

Can you travel all the way by boat from Mombasa?

There is no normal scheduled passenger ferry that provides a sensible Mombasa-to-Lamu transfer. A private sea charter is a specialist voyage, not the equivalent of booking a ferry seat. It requires a suitable licensed vessel, professional crew, fuel planning, weather assessment, safety equipment and an agreed diversion plan.

For an ordinary holiday, fly or use the road to Mokowe. Do not accept an informal long-distance boat offer simply because it sounds adventurous.

Real traveller reports and what they establish

A 2025 Bookaway customer who booked Tawakal for this corridor reported that the ticket was not recorded as paid and that the bus used did not match the expected VIP description. That is one booking-platform report, not proof of a continuing operator-wide practice. It supports two precautions: verify the ticket directly with the carrier before travel and ask what the paid class physically includes.

An older Reddit budget traveller described using a bus and then a low-cost jetty boat, while criticising comfort and the road condition at that time. The journey sequence remains useful; the fare and former road condition are not current evidence. Current road works and conditions must be checked near departure.

The absence of many detailed recent Reddit accounts is not a reason to invent consensus. Official or live operator pages establish schedules and fares; individual reports add only lived context.

Safety and current-route checks

The route passes through a long northern coastal corridor. Security advice can change and should not be reduced to a permanent yes-or-no statement. Before a road journey, ask the operator whether the scheduled service is running normally, follow current Kenyan authority guidance, and check your own government's travel advice if it applies to you.

Use a recognised operator, travel during the day when possible, keep valuables discreet and send the vehicle details to your accommodation. Do not photograph security installations or checkpoints. A travel advisory describes risk; it does not replace instructions from authorities on the day.

Which option is best for your trip?

Traveller Best starting choice Reason
Two- or three-night Lamu visit Direct flight Preserves scarce holiday time
Backpacker with flexible time Day coach plus shared boat Lowest likely total cost
Family with young children Flight or private road transfer Fewer terminal uncertainties
Group of four Compare flight total with private vehicle and boat Vehicle economics improve when shared
Heavy luggage Private road transfer or a flight with confirmed allowance Avoid surprises at check-in
Mobility limitation Airline plus carefully documented assisted boat transfer Bus and jetty sequence can add barriers
Combining Malindi and Lamu Stay in Malindi, then travel onward Avoid backtracking to Mombasa

A workable booking sequence

  1. Decide whether time or money is the controlling factor.
  2. Confirm the final base: Lamu Old Town, Shela, Manda or another island property.
  3. Search the exact flight or bus date directly with the operator.
  4. Read luggage, change and refund terms before paying.
  5. Ask the accommodation to arrange or approve the final boat.
  6. Save operator numbers, tickets, meeting names and map pins offline.
  7. Reconfirm the day before departure.
  8. Leave enough daylight for the final water transfer.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Lamu from Mombasa?

The road journey to Mokowe is roughly 340 kilometres, followed by a boat to the island. Air distance is shorter, but a flight still needs airport transfers at both ends.

How long does the bus take?

Plan roughly 7 to 9 hours for many listed services and keep a wider 8-to-11-hour door-to-door allowance once reporting, stops, Mokowe and the boat are included. Use the live operator result for the specific date.

How much is the bus from Mombasa to Lamu?

Current September 2026 route pages displayed examples from about KES 1,700 to KES 2,500 one way depending on operator and class. These are not regulated permanent prices. Confirm the checkout total and whether the boat is separate.

Does Tahmeed go from Mombasa to Lamu?

Tahmeed serves coastal routes, but the public booking information checked for this guide did not establish a dependable direct Mombasa-to-Mokowe service. Verify the exact date with Tahmeed instead of assuming. Tawakal, Modern Coast and Mash Poa appeared in current route results, but each also requires live verification.

Where does the flight land?

At Manda Airport, code LAU, on Manda Island. Continue by boat to the accommodation.

Can you take a car onto Lamu Island?

No ordinary tourist road transfer continues into Lamu Old Town. Vehicles stop on the mainland; the final connection is by boat. Movement in town is mainly on foot, with boats linking settlements.

How this guide was researched

Route and live-booking evidence was checked on the Tawakal portal, Modern Coast route page, Mash Poa fare page and Skyward booking page. Airport identity was cross-checked against Kenya aviation and airport references. Operator inventory, fares and times can change, so the linked booking result for the actual date takes priority.

Traveller context comes from a dated Bookaway route report and a historical Reddit budget discussion. The older post is not used for current fares or road condition.
