Lamu travel guide
Lamu Travel Guide: Old Town, Shela, Beaches and Practical Advice
Choose Lamu for living Swahili heritage, dhow-linked island life and a deliberately slow trip, not for the easiest conventional beach resort. A rewarding first stay pairs a guided Lamu Old Town visit with time in Shela, one carefully checked boat excursion and unscheduled hours. Four nights are enough for that core; six or seven suit travellers who want the island rhythm rather than a sightseeing race.
The biggest decision comes before the hotel: check the current travel advice issued for your nationality and confirm that insurance remains valid. Government positions differ materially. After that, choose among Old Town, Shela and Manda by atmosphere, walking ability, boat dependence and access to food. A property described simply as “Lamu” can create a completely different stay depending on the island and jetty.
Read the current travel advice before booking
Lamu County has a serious and changeable security context. This guide cannot declare the destination safe for every traveller or override a government warning. Advice also differs by issuing country, so a friend travelling on another passport may have different insurance consequences.
As of September 2026, the examples below illustrate why the check must be personal and current. Do not rely on this table after a later update; open the linked advisory and read the map and wording that apply on the day you book and again before departure.
| Advisory example | Current position relevant to Lamu | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Advises US travellers not to travel to Lamu County | Do not treat a hotel booking as evidence that insurance or official advice permits the trip |
| United Kingdom | Excludes Lamu Island and Manda Island from its warning against all travel to most of Lamu County | Its detailed safety page still says to reach the islands by air and remain particularly vigilant |
| Canada | Excludes Lamu Island and Manda Island from its avoid-all-travel area but advises a high degree of caution there | Check insurer wording and avoid assuming that the mainland route has the same status as the islands |
| Australia | Advises travellers to reconsider their need to travel to Lamu County | A traveller should discuss the exact island and activity with the insurer before committing money |
If your government advises against the trip, changing the route or booking through a hotel does not automatically solve the issue. Ask the insurer in writing about Lamu Island, Manda Island, flights, boat transfers, medical evacuation and cancellation after an advisory change. A policy bought before the warning may still have restrictions.
Monitor Kenyan authority information, local media, the airline and the accommodation. Use established flights and hotel-confirmed boat transfers. Do not use an old visitor forum comment to justify an overland route through an area covered by a current warning.
Lamu at a glance
| Planning question | Short answer | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| What makes Lamu distinctive? | A continuously inhabited Swahili town, traditional architecture, island movement and dhow culture | It is a living community, not an open-air theme park |
| How many nights are useful? | Four for Old Town, Shela and one boat day; six or seven for a slower stay | Weather and tide can move an excursion |
| Where should a first-time visitor stay? | Old Town for culture, Shela for beach-village ease, Manda for a resort retreat | Every base depends on boats differently |
| Is Lamu car-free? | Old Town is not a usable car-based destination for visitors; walking and boats dominate | Lanes, steps, motorcycles, donkeys and luggage handling still affect access |
| Where do flights arrive? | Manda Airport on Manda Island | A boat and usually a final walk remain after landing |
| Is Shela Beach beside Lamu Old Town? | No. Shela is a separate village reached by boat or a substantial walk | Do not book Old Town expecting a resort beach outside the door |
| Is a dhow trip automatically safe? | No boat product is automatically safe | Verify crew, vessel, life jackets, weather policy, route and communications |
What Lamu is, and what it is not
UNESCO describes Lamu Old Town as the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, continuously inhabited for more than 700 years. Coral-stone and mangrove-timber buildings, courtyards, verandas, carved doors and narrow streets reflect long interaction among African, Arab, Persian, Indian and European trading worlds.
The designation protects more than attractive doorways. Homes, mosques, schools, workshops, shops and the waterfront remain in use. Calls to prayer, goods moving through lanes, donkeys, children going to school, wastewater problems and ordinary household life are part of the town. Treating residents as scenery would miss the point of visiting.
Lamu is not one island hotel zone. The visitor circuit spans Lamu Island, Manda Island and the water between them. Old Town, Shela, Ras Kitau and more remote properties require different boats and walking routes. “Beachfront” may mean a channel edge, a broad ocean beach, a small sandy frontage or access that changes with tide.
Choose the right base: Old Town, Shela or Manda
Lamu Old Town
Stay in Old Town when architecture, food, workshops, markets and the rhythms of a living historic town are the main reason for travelling. It gives the best chance to start a guided walk early and return to museums or shops without another boat.
The trade-offs are real. It is not a resort beach base. Historic houses may have steep open stairs, rooms arranged around courtyards, fan cooling and sound from lanes, boats or nearby mosques. The seafront is a working edge, and the lanes can include animals, uneven surfaces, drainage and persistent commercial approaches.
Shela
Shela is a separate village on Lamu Island. It is usually the easier choice for travellers who want a quieter-feeling base, a long beach, polished restaurants and boat access to Old Town. It can feel more visitor-oriented and cost more than basic Old Town options.
The village still requires walking through sandy or narrow routes, and individual properties may involve many steps. Not every Shela room has air conditioning or immediate beach access. The channel-front village and the open beach are related but not identical settings.
Manda Island and Ras Kitau
Manda suits travellers choosing a resort or lodge as the centre of the stay. It can offer beach space, pools and separation from Old Town, but meals, activities and social life may depend heavily on the property. Every Old Town or Shela outing adds a boat journey.
A remote-feeling location is not automatically private, quiet, accessible or safe for swimming. Ask which shore the room faces, how tide affects the beach, whether transfers run after dinner and what happens when wind or a flight delay changes the plan.
More remote archipelago stays
Kipungani, Kiwayu and other outlying places may appeal to experienced travellers seeking isolation, but they require a separate security, transport, medical and communications assessment. They are not casual extensions of a first Old Town weekend.
| Base | Best for | Main trade-off | Ask the property |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lamu Old Town | Heritage, food, markets and immersion | No resort beach, plus lane noise and access constraints | Exact jetty, porter, stairs, mosque or waterfront sound, cooling and room orientation |
| Shela | Beach time, couples, families and relaxed dining | Higher prices and boat use for Old Town | Actual beach route, steps, pool, air conditioning, generator and boat charges |
| Manda or Ras Kitau | Resort-led retreat and space | Strong dependence on property dining and boats | Included transfers, meal plan, tide, child safety, late boat and medical plan |
| Remote archipelago | Deliberate seclusion and nature | Limited services and complex logistics | Advisory status, transfer stages, communications, evacuation and cancellation |
A split stay can work when two properties offer genuinely different experiences, such as two Old Town nights followed by four quiet nights near a beach. On a four-night trip, moving luggage by foot and boat may consume more energy than simply visiting the other base.
When to visit Lamu
Weather in the archipelago affects flights, small boats, open-water routes, heat and how comfortable a traditional house feels. Broad seasons help with planning, but actual marine conditions control the day.
Peponi Hotel's first-party conditions guide describes two seasonal wind patterns. It says the stronger south-easterly Kusi commonly affects May to October, bringing rougher water and less favourable snorkelling, while the north-easterly Kaskazi from November to April generally brings calmer, clearer conditions. A hotel explanation is useful local context, not a forecast or an official navigation instruction.
| Period | Likely planning advantage | Main uncertainty | Booking response |
|---|---|---|---|
| January to March | Hot conditions and often calmer-water planning | Heat, strong sun and busy holiday dates | Reserve key rooms and schedule walks early |
| April to May | Quieter transition and possible value | Longer-rain risk, humidity and changing wind | Choose flexible air, boat and hotel terms |
| June to August | Cooler air can help walking | Stronger wind, rougher crossings and disrupted water plans | Keep one spare day and ask about room exposure |
| September to October | Transition toward warmer conditions | Wind and sea state remain variable | Confirm the boat route on the day |
| November | Warmer change toward Kaskazi | Short-rain variability | Protect a weather fallback |
| December | Festive energy and popular events | High demand, supplements and minimum stays | Compare complete price and cancellation |
Lamu's tides shape landings, mangrove channels, currents and beach width. A daily tide table still does not replace the captain's judgement about wind, visibility and vessel. Ask why a proposed departure time suits that route.
For forecasts and alerts, use the Kenya Meteorological Department. For a flight, also check directly with the airline before leaving for the airport.
How to get to Lamu, step by step
For most international visitors, flying to Manda Airport is the clearest route. The airport is on Manda Island, not in Lamu Old Town or Shela. Arrival therefore continues by boat and then usually on foot.
The correct flight may depart from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or Wilson Airport depending on airline and schedule. They are separate airports. A self-transfer needs time for baggage collection, road traffic, a new check-in and possible delay. Small-aircraft baggage limits may be lower than an international allowance.
| Stage | What actually happens | Question to resolve before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi or coast flight | Scheduled or charter service reaches Manda Airport | Which departure airport, baggage allowance, check-in time and ticket protection? |
| Aircraft to airport jetty | Passenger collects bags and meets the transfer contact | Who holds the name sign, and what number works if the flight changes? |
| Manda jetty to base | Boat crosses to Old Town, Shela or another property | Is it private or shared, included or charged, and are suitable life jackets carried? |
| Arrival jetty to room | Bags move through lanes, sand, stairs or a property landing | Is a porter arranged and paid, and how far is the walk? |
| Departure in reverse | Boat timing must protect the flight check-in | Who monitors flight changes, and how much buffer is used? |
Ask the hotel to write one complete arrival instruction containing the boat name or contact, jetty, fare, porter arrangement and emergency number. “Transfer included” should specify both directions, waiting after delay and all luggage.
Should you travel overland?
Do not choose a mainland road route until reading the advisory for your nationality and speaking with the insurer. The UK government currently tells its travellers to reach Lamu and Manda Islands by air, while several governments apply high-level warnings to mainland areas or the whole county. A bus being sold does not mean it fits your risk or insurance conditions.
This guide therefore does not quote an old bus fare or recommend a road operator. If the official position later permits the journey for you, verify the complete route to Mokowe, arrival before dark, operator standards, luggage, final boat, security information and cancellation directly.
Moving around the islands
Walking and boats are the core visitor transport. Old Town's lanes are narrow and uneven. Motorcycles and donkeys may also use them, so “no cars” does not mean a silent or obstruction-free pedestrian zone.
| Trip | Practical option | What to agree before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Manda Airport to Old Town | Prearranged boat | Passenger list, life jackets, luggage, fare and Old Town jetty |
| Manda Airport to Shela | Hotel or known water taxi | Direct route, shared or private status and final walk |
| Old Town to Shela | Known water taxi | Per-person or whole-boat price, pickup point and return hour |
| Shela to Manda dinner | Property boat or trusted operator | Return boat, weather fallback and late charge |
| Old Town walking tour | Vetted local guide | Duration, route, museum entry, workshop stops and shopping pressure |
| Takwa or mangrove outing | Suitable boat with guide | Tide window, landing, shade, water, entry, duration and contingency |
Agree the price before boarding. Ask whether it is per passenger or for the whole boat, whether waiting is included and whether the return is guaranteed. At night, use an operator known to the hotel and carry a small light for the walk after landing.
Luggage, stairs and accessibility
Wheeled luggage does not roll easily through every lane or sandy path. A compact bag and a prearranged porter make arrival easier. Ask who employs the porter, what the service costs and where responsibility for the bag changes.
Many restored Swahili houses have stairs that cannot be judged from a room photograph. Ask for the count and form of steps from jetty to bed, bathroom, restaurant and pool. Also ask about handrails, nighttime lighting, shower lip and evacuation. “Ground floor” can still require steps from the lane.
Where to stay in Lamu
Choose a base first, then a building, then a room. In a traditional house, room position controls airflow, view, stairs and sound. In a Manda resort, the meal plan and boat service can control the total cost more than the room rate.
| Stay type | It suits | Verify before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town heritage hotel | Travellers prioritising architecture and town life | Lane and mosque sound, stairs, cooling, pool access, jetty and porter |
| Shela boutique hotel | Couples and families wanting village and beach | Room position, air conditioning or fan, beach route and airport boat |
| Manda resort | Retreat-focused guests wanting facilities on site | Meals, dietary provision, transfer schedule, tide and medical support |
| Whole house or villa | Groups wanting privacy and staff-supported space | Manager, cook, groceries, pool safety, power, water and payment channel |
| Budget guesthouse | Independent travellers prioritising local context and price | Bathroom, mosquito protection, cooling, luggage route and reception hours |
The properties below illustrate four different choices. They are not a permanent ranking. Reports are linked to the property and trip described, not used to label a whole island or predict a future stay.
Peponi Hotel: established Shela seafront hotel
Peponi's own site lists individually arranged standard, superior and family rooms plus apartments. It says rooms have ocean views, ensuite bathrooms, overhead fans inside mosquito nets and safes. Travellers expecting air conditioning should not infer it from the price or category.
A January 2026 family visitor praised the boat arrival, staff, excursions, restaurant and beach access, while warning that reaching many rooms involved stairs. A July 2026 visitor also liked the location and individual rooms. In contrast, a March 2026 couple found their first room and bathroom tired, reported inconsistent guest handling and later billing follow-up, while still praising the food and setting. Management acknowledged that parts of the experience had fallen short and said the feedback was addressed.
One critical stay does not establish the condition of 29 differently arranged rooms. It makes the exact room more important. Ask for current photographs of the booked category, stair count, bathroom layout, fan and airflow, mosquito protection, airport transfer and how third-party excursions appear on the final bill.

Kijani Hotel: garden setting in Shela
Kijani Hotel describes a Shela seafront position near the main village jetty, with tropical gardens, a freshwater pool and rooftop restaurant. The site says its seasonal menu can address vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free needs, but a serious allergy still requires a direct kitchen conversation.
A January 2026 solo guest praised a spacious, clean room, food, view and service. An April 2026 solo visitor liked the meals, staff, pool and working air conditioning. A March 2026 solo traveller also enjoyed the restaurant and service but found their room below the restaurant and near a mosque too noisy during a large group's stay; management moved the guest to an apartment when asked. A July 2025 couple alleged multiple maintenance, linen, mosquito and Wi-Fi problems in a particular room. The property replied that it was working on facilities while preserving the hotel's character.
These reports show how room position and maintenance can matter more than a site-wide label. Ask for the numbered or located room, nearby restaurant and mosque sound, air conditioning, mosquito measures, plumbing checks, pool size and policy during group stays.

Lamu House: Old Town waterfront base
Lamu House describes restored Swahili townhouses on the Old Town seafront, with courtyards, pools, a restaurant and an airport boat transfer. It suits travellers who want to sleep inside the historic town rather than commute into it.
A May 2026 group of sisters praised the architecture, sea-facing view, restaurant, staff and birthday welcome. A January 2026 visitor also valued the pool, restaurant and airport transfer. The clearest critical reports available in the reviewed source were older: an October 2023 guest with mobility difficulties found the pool and room hard to use, and another October 2023 couple reported weak Wi-Fi and declining service. Because those reports predate current positive evidence by more than two years, they should be treated as older questions, not current findings.
Ask for the exact route from jetty to room, every step and handrail, how the pool is entered, current mosquito-net condition, present Wi-Fi coverage and room sound. An Old Town address should be chosen for town access, not sold as equivalent to Shela Beach.

The Majlis Resort: Manda Island retreat
The Majlis positions itself at Ras Kitau Bay on Manda Island and currently promotes pools, restaurants, rooms, experiences and complimentary direct-booking transfers. Confirm whether the same transfer applies to the rate and channel you use.
An August 2026 couple praised the spacious, clean room, staff and quiet atmosphere. Another August guest described strong restaurant service, food variety, pools and ocean views. A July 2026 family report strongly disagreed on food and value, alleging that many menu items were unavailable, vegetarian options were limited, service was inconsistent and Wi-Fi was unreliable, while singling out one employee for excellent care. A February 2026 day-pass visitor separately alleged an unexplained wait and discriminatory treatment. A day visit is not a room test, but it is relevant to guest handling.
Do not average those conflicting accounts into a vague score. Ask for the current menu for the actual board basis, specific vegetarian dishes available each day, expected Wi-Fi location and speed, day-guest policy, transfer timetable and response when weather delays a boat.

The future where to stay in Lamu will compare a broader set of houses, guesthouses and villas after verifying property-level evidence.
What to do in Lamu
The most valuable experiences are not a long checklist. They are a guided reading of Old Town, time on the water with a competent crew, a beach day and, if conditions work, one heritage or mangrove excursion.
1. Take a guided Old Town walk
A knowledgeable local guide can explain courtyard architecture, carved doors, street organisation, mosques, trade, craftsmanship and the difference between a private home and a public site. Agree on the duration, route, language, fee, museum entries and shopping stops before starting.
An October 2024 visitor said a guide materially improved a morning walk and reminded other visitors to dress respectfully. A February 2024 solo visitor likewise valued a two-hour guided route and the shade of narrow lanes. Other reports are more critical. A May 2024 visitor described litter, drainage, flies and persistent touting, while an August 2025 couple loved the lanes, shops, galleries and daily life.
Those reactions are not mutually exclusive. Old Town can be historically absorbing and physically untidy on the same day. Do not promise a polished heritage precinct. Use closed shoes, watch for animals and motorcycles, and respond to unwanted offers firmly without assuming every guide is unlicensed.

2. Visit Lamu Museum, the fort and a Swahili house
The National Museums of Kenya Lamu Museum page gives the museum context and lists nearby Lamu Fort, the Swahili House Museum, German Post Office Museum and Takwa Ruins. It currently says Lamu Museum opens daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and uses eCitizen rather than cash for admission. Recheck before visiting because hours and payment systems can change.
The museum is most useful near the start of the stay. It gives language for the town walk and moves the trip beyond decorative-door photographs. Ask whether one ticket covers multiple sites, whether a guide is included and which galleries are open.
3. Sail on a dhow, but inspect the product
A dhow sunset sail can be a short, calm introduction to the channel. A full-day trip with swimming, fishing, mangroves or lunch is a different product. The traditional vessel does not remove modern safety responsibilities.
An April 2026 group praised one sunset operator's boat, sailing and ability to collect in either Old Town or Shela. February and May 2026 reports about a combined guide and dhow product praised the crew's attention, vessel condition, stories, snacks and water. These are favourable reports about named experiences, not evidence that every boat meets the same standard.
Before paying, ask:
- who owns and commands the vessel;
- passenger capacity and the number actually booked;
- whether a correctly sized life jacket exists for every passenger;
- what communication and emergency equipment are carried;
- whether the trip sails, motors or uses both;
- the exact route, swimming stop and toilet arrangement;
- shade, drinking water, food handling and allergy controls;
- cancellation or route changes for wind, rain or poor visibility; and
- pickup and return jetty, especially after sunset.

4. Use Shela Beach at the right scale
Shela Beach is long and exposed. A short early walk, swim in locally recommended conditions and return for shade is different from walking for hours toward the dunes or Kizingo. Carry water and sun protection even when wind makes the heat less obvious.
A February 2024 couple praised the quiet sand and warm, clear water they experienced. A December 2024 couple also liked the beach but said sandflies caused severe irritation during their stay. An older September 2022 visitor described a long walk as beautiful but exposed. None of these reports predicts insects, water or solitude on your day.
Ask the accommodation about current sandflies, tide, current, safe swimming area and when the sun or wind makes a walk uncomfortable. Do not start a long route without knowing the return distance and whether a boat pickup is actually arranged.

5. Visit Takwa Ruins only with tide-aware transport
National Museums of Kenya describes Takwa as the remains of a 15th- to 16th-century Swahili settlement on Manda Island and currently lists daily hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Boat access and the landing are part of the experience.
A 2023 group praised its guide and historical interpretation but stressed the heat. An older 2018 visitor described being caught by low tide and needing an improvised return, while finding the mangrove approach memorable and the on-site explanation limited. The age of that report means it cannot establish current operations, but the tidal mechanism remains a precise question for the captain.
Confirm the tide window, landing, entry payment, guide, shade, drinking water, footwear and return contingency. A small site can still justify a half day when the boat and mangrove journey are part of the plan.

6. Observe dhow building and local craft respectfully
Matondoni and local workshops may be suggested for dhow building, wood carving, silver work or weaving. These are working places, not guaranteed demonstrations. Arrange the visit through a guide who has permission, agree whether a contribution or purchase is expected and ask before photographing a person or process.
Avoid presenting a sale as cultural access. A good guide should be able to explain when a workshop is closed or when residents do not want visitors.
7. Treat donkey welfare as part of the visit
Donkeys move goods and materials through lanes inaccessible to vehicles. Welfare standards vary, and seeing an overloaded or injured animal can be distressing. Do not ride simply because it is offered. Walking or using a responsibly arranged porter may be the better choice.
If visiting an animal-welfare organisation, use its official hours and donation channel. Do not touch or feed an animal without staff permission.
The future things to do in Lamu will give each experience the fuller logistics it needs.
A realistic five-day Lamu itinerary
This plan suits a first-time visitor staying in either Old Town or Shela. Manda guests should add boat time to every town day.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon or evening | Why this pace works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Flight to Manda and prearranged boat | Check in, learn the jetty and take a short orientation walk | Leaves room for flight or luggage delay |
| Day 1 | Lamu Museum and guided Old Town walk | Long lunch, rest and simple waterfront evening | Keeps historical context together without walking in midday heat |
| Day 2 | Shela village and a manageable beach section | Pool or shade, then a checked sunset dhow | Avoids turning the beach into an endurance walk |
| Day 3 | Takwa if tide and conditions suit | Rest and dinner near the base | Gives the boat and heritage stop enough time |
| Day 4 | Free morning, craft visit or rescheduled boat | Planned meal in Old Town, Shela or Manda | Absorbs weather change without losing the main experience |
| Departure | Short local walk only | Boat to Manda with flight buffer | Protects the only practical departure connection |
With four nights, choose Takwa or a full-day dhow rather than both. With seven, add a genuinely free beach day and perhaps a second guided interest such as cooking, craft or conservation. Do not insert a remote-island excursion merely to fill a day.
Rain, children and limited mobility
In rain or strong wind, accept that a boat may be delayed or cancelled. Move the museum, a covered meal or a short Old Town activity instead of pressuring a captain to operate. Keep one spare day if a water experience matters.
For children, verify balcony and stair barriers, pool supervision, child life jackets, familiar food and heat breaks. Traditional open architecture can contain drops, pools and roof terraces that require active adult supervision.
For limited mobility, ask for a video from the arrival jetty to the exact room. Count steps, examine handrails and discuss boat boarding at the expected tide. Old Town's surface and Shela's sand can be demanding even when distances look short.
Food and evening planning
Lamu's food is one of the reasons to leave a resort meal plan at least once. Swahili dishes can draw on coconut, rice, fish, spices, legumes, cassava, plantain and local breads. Hotels add international menus, while home-style meals or cooking experiences can provide more context when arranged respectfully.
| Meal decision | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Seafood | Is the price per plate, item or weight, and what was landed today? | Availability and final cost change |
| Vegetarian or vegan meal | Which complete dishes are available tonight, not just side dishes? | Island supply and menu breadth vary |
| Allergy | Can the kitchen identify ingredients and prevent cross-contact? | Preference is not the same as medical safety |
| Hotel board basis | Which restaurants and drinks are included on each night? | A remote Manda stay may have few alternatives |
| Old Town or Shela dinner | Is the restaurant open, and how will you return? | A late boat should be arranged before eating |
| Home meal or cooking visit | Who hosts, what is paid and may photographs be taken? | Clear consent prevents a cultural visit becoming intrusive |
During Ramadan, daytime hours can change and public eating deserves particular sensitivity. Ask the hotel what remains available and be discreet rather than expecting the town to operate around a visitor's normal schedule.
The future Lamu restaurant guide will compare named venues with current menus and attributable favourable and critical evidence.
Cultural respect in a living Muslim town
Lamu Old Town and Shela are predominantly Muslim communities. Cover shoulders and knees in town and villages, and keep swimwear for the beach, pool or boat where the operator says it is appropriate. Remove shoes when invited into a home or religious space and follow the host's lead.
Calls to prayer are part of local life. A room near a mosque may hear them early. The correct response is to choose the room knowingly, not to demand that the town stop. Ask the hotel directly about proximity and sound before booking.
Photographs need consent. A carved door may be the entrance to an occupied home. Ask before photographing a person, child, worship, doorway in use, workshop at close range or private courtyard. A guide's presence does not replace the subject's permission.
Alcohol is available in some hotels and restaurants but should not be carried or consumed thoughtlessly through conservative public areas. Public affection and clothing norms also deserve local judgement. LGBT+ travellers should read current legal and safety guidance for Kenya because same-sex sexual activity is illegal and public visibility can carry risk.
Money, connectivity and practical controls
M-Pesa is widely used, but an international visitor may not have a Kenyan account. Cards may work at hotels and larger restaurants while failing at a small shop, boat or during a connection outage. Carry Kenyan shillings in modest amounts and ask for the final price before service.
For a boat or guide, write down the date, party size, vessel, captain, route, start and return, inclusions, entry fees, meals, cancellation and total cost. If a payment number changes in a message, verify it through the operator's original published contact or your accommodation.
Remote work requires property-level checks. Ask for a recent speed test from the exact room or work area, power backup, mobile-network signal and the quietest hours. Thick walls, room position and outages can create different results within one hotel. Do not rely on an island-wide “good Wi-Fi” claim.
Medical facilities are more limited than in Nairobi or Mombasa. Buy insurance that covers the destination, planned boat activities and medical evacuation. Carry essential medication, a basic first-aid kit and enough buffer for a disrupted flight. Obtain professional travel-health advice before departure.
Lamu, Diani, Watamu or Zanzibar?
| Destination | Choose it for | Choose somewhere else if |
|---|---|---|
| Lamu | Living Swahili heritage, dhow travel, Old Town and a slow island stay | You need simple road access or a large conventional resort strip |
| Diani | Broad beach-resort choice, activities and South Coast logistics | A historic town is the main purpose of the trip |
| Watamu | Marine park, Mida Creek, Gedi and a compact North Coast base | You want to stay inside a continuously inhabited historic town |
| Mombasa | Fort Jesus, Old Town, city services and transport connections | You want an island retreat throughout |
| Zanzibar | A larger international island destination with Stone Town and many beach regions | Your priority is a smaller Kenyan Swahili town and archipelago |
Lamu is not a miniature Zanzibar. Nor is Shela simply another Diani. Choose it because walking, boats, cultural context and slower logistics are part of the desired trip.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lamu safe to visit?
No travel guide can answer that universally. Government advisories differ and can change quickly. Check the advice for your nationality, Kenyan information, airline and hotel guidance, then obtain written insurance confirmation for the exact islands, flights and boats. Do not ignore an official warning because other tourists travelled.
How many days do you need in Lamu?
Four nights give Old Town, Shela and one boat excursion at a reasonable pace. Six or seven are better for a slow trip with weather flexibility.
Should you stay in Lamu Old Town or Shela?
Choose Old Town for immediate heritage, markets and town life. Choose Shela for easier beach access and a quieter visitor-oriented base. Visit the other by known water taxi rather than expecting either to provide the same experience.
What is the difference between Lamu Island and Lamu County?
Lamu Island is one island within the larger county and archipelago. Travel advisories may distinguish Lamu Island and Manda Island from mainland parts of Lamu County, or may cover the whole county. Read the exact wording and map.
Where do flights to Lamu land?
At Manda Airport on Manda Island. A boat transfer then reaches Old Town, Shela or another property. Confirm both directions and the final luggage walk before departure.
Can you drive to Lamu?
An overland trip reaches the mainland rather than driving into Old Town, and a boat is still required. More importantly, current government advice may prohibit or discourage the mainland route for your nationality. Flying to Manda is the route explicitly recommended by UK advice for its travellers.
Are there cars in Lamu Old Town?
Old Town is not organised around visitor cars. People mainly walk, and boats provide inter-island transport. Donkeys and motorcycles also use some routes, so expect narrow shared lanes rather than an empty pedestrian precinct.
How do you travel between Old Town and Shela?
By water taxi or a substantial walk. Most visitors use a known boat, particularly with luggage, heat or after dark. Agree the fare and return before boarding.
Is Shela Beach safe for swimming?
Conditions vary by tide, wind and exact section. Ask the hotel where guests currently enter, do not swim alone in unfamiliar water and supervise children. A calm photograph is not a safety assessment.
Is a sunset dhow trip worth it?
It can be one of the clearest expressions of the archipelago when the crew and vessel are suitable. Check life jackets, capacity, weather, route and return as carefully as the view.
Can children visit Lamu?
Yes, with active planning. Choose a property for stair and balcony safety, pool supervision, child-sized life jackets, cooling, food and short transfers. A toddler and a confident teenager need different rooms and boat products.
Is Lamu accessible for limited mobility?
It is challenging. Boats, variable tide, sand, uneven lanes and historic stairs can all create barriers. Request a video of the full arrival route and exact room, and discuss boarding assistance and medical needs before paying.
What should you wear in Lamu?
Wear lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees in Old Town and villages. Keep swimwear for the beach, pool and appropriate boat settings. Carry a scarf or light layer for religious or family spaces.
Can you visit Lamu as a day trip from Malindi?
It is usually a poor use of time. Flights, airport reporting, boats and the Old Town experience deserve an overnight stay. The mainland road route may also conflict with current travel advice.
