Diani travel guide
Nairobi to Diani Beach: Flights, SGR Train, Bus and Driving
The fastest Nairobi-to-Diani option is a direct flight to Diani Airport at Ukunda (UKA), usually followed by a short hotel transfer. The best-value comfortable route is the Madaraka Express to Mombasa Terminus, followed by a pre-booked transfer using the Dongo Kundu bypass. Overnight coaches cost less but deliver the longest and least predictable journey.
Choose from the complete door-to-door trip, not the headline ticket price. Nairobi airport transfers, baggage, the Mombasa-to-Diani leg and the exact hotel position can reverse the apparent saving.
Options compared
| Option | Door-to-door allowance | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct flight to Diani, UKA | About 3 to 5 hours from a Nairobi hotel | Short trips and travellers avoiding road fatigue | Variable fare, smaller-aircraft baggage rules |
| SGR plus private Diani transfer | About 8 to 11 hours | Comfort, scenery and predictable main leg | Separate stations and final road transfer |
| SGR plus shared shuttle | About 9 to 12 hours | Budget-conscious solo travellers | Waiting and fixed drop-off risk |
| Overnight coach to Mombasa/Ukunda | About 10 to 15+ hours | Lowest through-fare seekers | Sleep quality, traffic and luggage control |
| Self-drive/private road transfer | About 9 to 13+ hours | Flexible groups and stopovers | Fatigue, road risk and vehicle cost |
Flying directly to Diani
Safarilink and other domestic operators sell Nairobi-Diani services on current dates, usually from Wilson Airport. Diani Airport sits at Ukunda, close to the beach strip. A direct flight avoids Mombasa traffic and the South Coast road transfer.
What to check
- Wilson or JKIA departure airport.
- Operating airline and aircraft-specific baggage.
- Exact checked and cabin allowance.
- Ukunda hotel transfer and distance to Galu, Kinondo or Chale access.
- Change terms if a safari flight is delayed.
Wilson is separate from JKIA. A traveller arriving internationally should allow several hours to clear the airport, cross Nairobi and check in again, or stay overnight.
SGR train plus road transfer
Kenya Railways' current 2026 schedule shows daily Nairobi departures at 8:00 a.m. for the inter-county train, 3:00 p.m. for the afternoon express and 10:00 p.m. for the night train. Timetables change, so confirm through Kenya Railways before booking onward transport.
The train ends at Mombasa Terminus in Miritini, not Diani. From there, a direct car can use the Dongo Kundu bypass toward Ukunda and Diani.
| Train | Current scheduled Mombasa arrival | Diani implication |
|---|---|---|
| 08:00 inter-county | About 14:00 | Daylight transfer and evening hotel arrival |
| 15:00 express | About 20:30 | Pre-booked night transfer strongly preferred |
| 22:00 night | About 03:55 | Very early arrival; confirm safe waiting and pickup |
Do not assume a hotel accepts check-in immediately after the night train. Arrange the room or baggage plan.
Booking the SGR correctly
Use the official Kenya Railways platform. Current guidance says arrive at least 60 minutes before departure, bring original identification and note that platform gates close before the train leaves. Tickets can be sold in advance within the railway's stated window.
Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau is not Nairobi Central Station. Kenya Railways operates link trains at listed times, but many travellers use taxi or hotel transfer. Leave traffic margin.
Mombasa Terminus to Diani
A pre-booked car is easiest. Shared shuttles can be economical, but confirm whether the quoted endpoint is Ukunda, central Diani or the exact hotel. Read our dedicated Mombasa SGR to Diani guide for prices, route options and station safety.
Bus or coach
Coaches may sell Nairobi-Mombasa, Nairobi-Ukunda or other coast routings. A direct-sounding ticket can still involve a roadside drop or connection. Ask for the terminal, seat class, luggage process, toilet stops and expected arrival.
Tahmeed and other established coast operators are commonly considered by travellers, but schedules and destination coverage change. Buy through the operator's official channel and verify whether “Diani” means Ukunda stage or hotel delivery.
Bus strengths and weaknesses
| Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|
| Often lower fare | Road traffic makes arrival uncertain |
| Overnight travel can save a hotel night | Sleep and comfort vary |
| More luggage flexibility on some coaches | Terminal and baggage handling need attention |
| Possible Ukunda routing | Final hotel taxi may still be required |
Driving
The road journey is long. Share driving, avoid unrealistic overnight pushes and do not build the plan around a best-case map estimate. A private driver is safer for travellers unfamiliar with the route, but confirm rest, vehicle condition and whether the quote covers a one-way empty return.
A Voi or Tsavo stop can turn transport into an itinerary. See how to combine safari and coast for a deliberate version.
Which option is best for you?
| Traveller | Best starting choice |
|---|---|
| International visitor with one coast week | Direct flight if connection is safe |
| Family with children | Flight or day SGR plus private car |
| Solo budget traveller | Day SGR plus shared shuttle |
| Safari ending at Wilson | Direct Diani flight |
| Heavy sports luggage | Compare airline excess rules with train |
| Nervous night traveller | Day flight or morning SGR |
Where your Diani hotel is matters
Ukunda Airport is inland from the beach. Central Diani is closest to many services; Galu, Kinondo and the Chale direction add road time. Provide a pin. “Diani” is not a single gate.
Compare areas with where to stay in Diani and select an appropriate Diani beachfront hotel.
Costs people forget
| Hidden cost | Applies to |
