Best Restaurants in Lamu: Old Town, Shela and Island Dining

For a first visit, eat at Seafront Cafe or Moonrise in Lamu Old Town for an accessible town meal, Kijani or Peponi in Shela for a more polished lunch or dinner, and The Majlis only when a Manda restaurant reservation and both boats are confirmed. Whispers is a useful daytime garden break if current opening is verified. Koa offers a newer Shela menu, but several recent guests have made serious service-discrimination allegations that a prospective diner should read before deciding.

There is no honest island-wide ranking. A modest Old Town curry, a Shela hotel terrace and a Manda resort dinner solve different problems. The best choice is the one that fits where you sleep, what you want to spend, your dietary needs and how you will get home.

Lamu restaurant shortlist by purpose

Venue Area Best reason to go Relative price Main limitation to resolve
Seafront Cafe Lamu Old Town waterfront Casual Swahili-style meal, juice and everyday town view Value Current hours, seafood portion/price and service pace
Moonrise Restaurant Lamu Old Town waterfront Sit-down seafood, varied meals and a hotel-supported setting Moderate to special occasion Menu availability, advance order and slower service
Whispers Coffeeshop Lamu Old Town Quiet courtyard coffee, juice or light daytime stop Moderate cafe Current opening, limited menu and portion expectations
Peponi Hotel Restaurant Shela waterfront Destination lunch, sundowner or established hotel dinner Special occasion Reservation, table position, menu price and return boat
Kijani Rooftop Restaurant Shela Rooftop breeze, seafood, curries and mixed-diet groups Moderate to special occasion Reservation reliability, stairs, music/event and dish availability
Koa Lamu Shela Contemporary casual menu and waterfront stop Moderate to special occasion Recent discrimination allegations and unavailable seafood items
The Majlis Restaurant Manda, Ras Kitau Resort dinner and sunset setting Special occasion plus transport Non-resident access, menu/vegetarian depth and boats both ways

Relative price compares these Lamu choices, not restaurants across Kenya. Menus, catch, taxes and hotel event pricing can change. Ask for a current menu or written range on the day.

Choose the island before the table

Where you are staying Easiest dinner pattern Higher-effort option Essential return plan
Lamu Old Town Seafront Cafe, Moonrise or another verified town venue Shela or Manda hotel dinner Known water taxi, agreed fare, pickup jetty and time
Shela Kijani, Peponi, Koa or a verified village cafe Old Town dinner or Manda Boat both ways or a safe known walking/boat plan
Manda resort Eat on property Shela or Old Town Resort boat schedule, late charge and weather fallback
Day visitor Lunch in the place already being visited Cross-island dinner Do not improvise an unknown night boat

Manda Airport, Manda resorts, Lamu Old Town and Shela are not one walkable restaurant district. A three-minute-looking crossing still involves a boat, tide, pickup, landing and final walk. Agree the price as per person or whole boat before dining. A restaurant should not become expensive by surprise after the last regular return.

Read where to stay in Lamu before planning multiple cross-island dinners. The accommodation base determines how much spontaneity is realistic.

How these restaurants were selected

Every venue has a current operating signal through a first-party page or recent restaurant listing, a distinct reason to visit and enough public evidence to discuss tradeoffs. This is not a list copied from average ratings. It excludes businesses whose status or evidence was too thin to support a confident recommendation.

For each venue, the restaurant's own page establishes what it currently claims to offer. Dated visitor reports describe individual meals. Neither source proves how the kitchen will perform tonight.

Seafront Cafe: the clearest casual Old Town meal

Seafront Cafe presents itself as a small family-run waterfront cafe serving seafood, Swahili dishes, non-seafood choices and fruit juices. Choose it for an unfussy town lunch or early dinner where watching boats, pedestrians and donkeys is part of the setting.

A July 2025 group praised a vegetable curry, fish curry, pancakes, portion size and value. A February 2024 couple returned more than once and praised juices, fish soups, friendly staff and the experience of food being prepared to order. Those accounts support Seafront as a useful value comparison, not as proof that every dish is fast.

The detailed criticism in the reviewed source is older. An August 2021 family reported rude service, uncertainty about seafood portions and poor value despite finding the food acceptable. Its age prevents treating it as a current service finding. It makes the price and portion questions precise.

Ask before going: What dishes are actually available now? Is seafood priced per plate, piece or weight? What comes with it? How long will preparation take? Is the juice made with treated water and ice? Does the venue accept the payment method you plan to use?

Moonrise: an Old Town restaurant for a longer sit-down meal

Moonrise Restaurant sits on the Old Town waterfront at Lamu House and serves hotel guests and outside diners. It is a useful dinner choice for someone who wants seafood, a broader menu and a staffed hotel setting without travelling to Shela.

A July 2025 solo traveller used it repeatedly and praised the convenient position, friendly service and enough choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. November and December 2025 visitors praised the atmosphere, staff, tuna or house-made ice cream. A February 2024 solo guest enjoyed the seafood and setting but described service as slow.

Older criticism is still worth separating. A 2021 guest thought the menu had narrowed, prices had risen and cocktails were weak compared with an earlier visit. That cannot establish the current menu. It is a reason to read today's choices and order time before sitting down.

Ask before going: Is Moonrise open to non-residents for this meal? Which seafood and vegetarian mains are available? Should the main be ordered in advance? Is a group, event or live-music night planned? Does the final bill include tax or service?

Whispers Coffeeshop: a daytime courtyard pause

Whispers Coffeeshop is a town-centre courtyard cafe rather than a full destination dinner. Use it for coffee, juice, cake or a light lunch between the museum and Old Town walk.

An August 2024 group valued the quiet walled garden, respite from the street and reasonable cost. A January 2023 family liked the welcoming staff and garden but found salads too small and the food and drinks disappointing. A 2021 visitor liked the garden coffee stop but wanted more menu choice.

The listing did not show reliable current hours during research. The most recent detailed evidence is also thinner than for the other venues. Call or ask a trusted local contact before building a morning around it.

Ask before going: Are you open today, and until when? Is the kitchen serving full lunch or only drinks and pastries? Which items are prepared today? Is the garden available, and can dietary needs be handled without cross-contact?

Peponi Hotel Restaurant: Shela's established destination table

Peponi Hotel Restaurant is an established Shela waterfront hotel restaurant. It is best used as a deliberate lunch, sundowner or dinner, not described as the “best” merely because many listicles repeat the name.

An October 2025 couple praised a long terrace lunch, the food and service. A February 2025 couple ate there three times and valued the seafood, desserts, attentive service and dhow-watching setting. A February 2024 solo guest likewise praised the food and staff help finding a boat back to Old Town, but described the atmosphere as socially exclusive compared with more mixed local restaurants.

That last point is a visitor's social reading, not an accusation about a service transaction. It is still relevant to traveller fit. Peponi is a polished hotel environment, which may be exactly right for a special meal and less useful for somebody seeking an everyday local cafe.

Ask before going: Are non-resident reservations accepted at the chosen time? Which terrace area is allocated? Is the menu à la carte or fixed for an event? What is the dress expectation? Who will arrange the boat back, and what is its price and last pickup?

Kijani Rooftop: strong mixed-group evidence with a reservation warning

Kijani's restaurant page describes an open-air Shela rooftop restaurant with seafood, Swahili curries and international dishes. Its seasonal menu includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free labels, but a serious allergy still needs direct kitchen confirmation.

An April 2026 family ate there repeatedly over five days and praised consistency, staff and child appeal. A November 2025 family praised presentation, seafood, drinks, rooftop view and breeze. Those repeated visits are useful evidence that the venue can work for a mixed group.

A February 2024 group reported that a table booked and checked twice was given away, leaving them without a dinner during a busy evening. A June 2025 solo guest writing on the hotel page criticised an uninterested welcome and loud music at lunch, while withholding judgement on the food. These are individual reports, but they make reservation reconfirmation and atmosphere worth checking. Read the restaurant-specific Kijani reviews.

Ask before going: Please confirm the reservation in writing and again that afternoon. Which level and table are assigned, and how many stairs are involved? Is music, a group or an event planned? Which marked vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free mains are actually available tonight?

Koa Lamu: a current option with serious unresolved visitor allegations

Koa Lamu's current review page identifies a contemporary Shela waterfront restaurant with a mixed menu. A June 2026 solo guest praised the food, waterfront position and helpful staff. A June 2025 family of six said the group ate well and the kitchen adapted food for two toddlers. A September 2025 group praised the tacos but said several seafood items shown on the menu were unavailable.

There is also a serious pattern that should not be hidden. Three April and May 2026 reviewers alleged racist or unequal service toward Kenyan or African guests, including being ignored while later-arriving white diners were served. These are allegations by individual visitors, not findings this guide can independently adjudicate. The direct review page lets a reader examine the wording and any response before choosing.

Because the allegations are recent, specific and repeated, Koa is included as a read-before-going option rather than given an unqualified recommendation. A later management or operational response should be added if the venue publishes one.

Ask before going: Is the venue accepting tables now? Which menu items are available? How are orders queued and recorded? Who is the duty manager if service is skipped or guests feel they are treated unequally? Obtain a written reservation for a planned dinner.

The Majlis Restaurant: make transport part of the reservation

The Majlis Resort operates restaurants for its Manda Island resort. An outside guest should never assume access, menu, dress, table or a return boat. Confirm all five.

Recent hotel-stay evidence is more useful than the restaurant listing's mostly older reviews. August 2026 guests praised restaurant staff, food variety, pools and ocean setting. A July 2026 family strongly disagreed, alleging that many menu items were unavailable, vegetarian choice was limited and service was inconsistent, while praising one employee. Read the dated context on the Majlis hotel review page. The separate restaurant page contains older positive and negative experiences and should not be mistaken for a current menu test.

Ask before going: Are non-residents accepted? Which restaurant and menu operate that evening? Which complete vegetarian or allergy-safe dishes are confirmed? Is there a minimum spend, resort fee or fixed menu? Who provides the boat each way, at what tide, from which jetty and at what total price?

This is not a verdict table. It records what happened to particular diners and converts it into a useful next question.

What to order without inventing a “must-eat” dish

Lamu cooking can draw on rice, coconut, fish, shellfish, legumes, spices, cassava, plantain, breads and fruit. Availability changes with catch, season, supply and the kitchen.

Food or drink What it may be Question that prevents disappointment
Fish curry Fish in a coconut- or spice-led sauce Which fish, bone-in or fillet, and what accompaniments?
Grilled fish or lobster Catch sold by item, portion or sometimes weight What is the exact item, size, price unit and final total before cooking?
Pilau or biryani Spiced rice with meat, seafood or vegetables Which protein, spice level and portion?
Maharagwe ya nazi Beans cooked with coconut Is stock or garnish fully vegetarian or vegan?
Mahamri Lightly sweet fried coastal bread, often at breakfast Is it made today and what accompanies it?
Samosa or snack plate Meat, vegetable, cheese or seafood filling Which filling and fryer is used?
Fresh juice Seasonal fruit, sometimes with ice or added water Is water treated and is sugar added?

Do not ask a kitchen to guarantee a particular fish before confirming the day's catch. A short menu with available ingredients can be better than a long menu built on unavailable items.

Vegetarian, vegan and allergy planning

“Vegetarian friendly” may mean several complete mains or only sides. “No nuts” may be misunderstood if the kitchen uses coconut, peanuts, cashews, sesame or shared equipment.

For a preference, ask which full dishes are available today. For a serious allergy, contact the kitchen before travel and use precise language:

I have a medically serious allergy to [ingredient]. I cannot eat it in the dish, stock, sauce, garnish or through shared oil, utensils or surfaces. Can your kitchen prepare one complete meal under those conditions? Please tell me if that cannot be guaranteed.

Carry emergency medication and do not surrender it to a bag on another island. If the kitchen cannot answer clearly, choose a simpler meal or eat at the accommodation where communication happened in advance.

For vegan food, confirm coconut milk is not paired with fish or meat stock and that bread or dessert does not contain egg, milk or honey if those are excluded. Kijani publishes marked options, but labels still require a current ingredient check.

Families, older travellers and accessibility

Families

Ask about high chairs, child portions, spice level, stairs, open waterfront edges and the time food takes. Kijani's April 2026 family report and Koa's June 2025 report show that both handled children well during those meals, not that either setup suits every age.

An early dinner near the accommodation is usually easier than taking a tired child across the channel after dark. Bring a familiar snack without assuming the restaurant can serve immediately.

Older travellers and limited mobility

Rooftops, jetties, sand and historic houses can introduce steps not visible on a restaurant page. Ask for the route from boat or lane to the actual table, handrails, toilet access, seating height and lighting. A waterfront view may be reached only by a steep staircase.

For Manda, assess the boat at both expected tides. “Staff will assist” is not enough. Ask how many steps, whether boarding is wet, where hands can hold and how a mobility aid travels.

Ramadan, alcohol and respectful dining

Lamu Old Town and Shela are predominantly Muslim communities. During Ramadan, some daytime businesses may close or alter hours while hotel restaurants continue. Confirm opening, eat discreetly in appropriate premises and expect evening demand after sunset.

Alcohol is available at some hotels and restaurants, not everywhere. Do not treat its absence as poor service or carry drinks through residential lanes. Confirm whether a venue serves alcohol and how the group will return safely.

Dress that works at a resort pool may not be appropriate in Old Town or Shela village. Cover shoulders and knees for the walk to the restaurant, then follow the venue's guidance.

Price the whole dinner, including the boat

Cost line Confirm before leaving Why it changes value
Food Current menu, seafood unit, sides and sharing size “Market price” needs an agreed total
Drink Water, juice, alcohol, corkage and tax Resort drinks can dominate a light meal
Reservation Deposit, fixed menu, minimum spend and cancellation Festive nights may not use the usual menu
Boat Per person or whole boat, both ways and late fee A Manda or Shela dinner can cost more in transport than expected
Waiting Whether the boat waits and for how long Returning to arrange a second boat adds delay
Service Included charge and optional tip Avoid paying the same service twice
Currency KES or another currency and conversion method A quoted dollar amount may be settled differently

Keep the restaurant and boat contacts offline. Confirm the return before ordering, not after dessert. If wind or tide makes the crossing unsuitable, choose a nearby dinner rather than pressuring the captain.

A three-day eating pattern

Day 1: Old Town context

Have lunch at Seafront Cafe after the museum or walking tour, when the waterfront setting adds context. Use Whispers as a daytime break if it is open. Choose Moonrise for a more structured dinner near an Old Town hotel.

Day 2: Shela

Plan Peponi or Kijani for lunch or an early dinner. A daylight meal gives the view without adding a late crossing. If choosing Koa, read the current service allegations and any management response first.

Day 3: Manda only if it is the experience

Reserve The Majlis and both boats, or eat at the Manda accommodation. Do not cross merely to tick off a restaurant when the same evening would be easier and better in Shela.

Leave one meal unplanned enough to follow a trusted current recommendation from the accommodation. Verify that the venue exists and is open before walking across town.

Common mistakes

  1. Ranking Old Town, Shela and Manda restaurants as if transport were identical.
  2. Arranging the return boat after dinner.
  3. Ordering seafood without agreeing item, size, price unit and sides.
  4. Treating an old menu photograph as current.
  5. Assuming “vegetarian friendly” covers vegan or allergy needs.
  6. Reserving a rooftop without checking stairs.
  7. Calling a restaurant slow without asking whether food is cooked to order.
  8. Ignoring repeated recent service allegations because the average score is acceptable.
  9. Reading a hotel-stay comment as a complete restaurant review.
  10. Expecting normal daytime hours during Ramadan without checking.
  11. Moving a child or mobility-limited diner across the channel for a meal that has no confirmed table.
  12. Paying a changed number without verifying it through the venue's original contact.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best restaurant in Lamu?

There is no single winner across different islands and meal types. Seafront Cafe is the strongest casual Old Town choice, Moonrise suits a longer town dinner, Peponi and Kijani are the main Shela destination comparisons, and The Majlis is a Manda resort meal that requires transport planning.

Where can I try local Swahili food?

Start with a current Old Town cafe serving rice, coconut, fish, beans and breads, or choose a clearly described hosted meal. Ask what is cooked that day rather than demanding a permanent “traditional menu.”

Do I need restaurant reservations in Lamu?

Reserve Peponi, Kijani, Koa and The Majlis for dinner, events and busy periods. Reconfirm that afternoon. Casual Old Town venues may not need a booking but still require an opening check.

Can I eat at hotel restaurants if I am not staying there?

Often, but never assume access. Confirm the meal, table, dress, deposit and whether outside guests may use any other facility. Manda requires a boat plan as well.

Are there good vegetarian or vegan options?

There can be. Kijani currently publishes marked choices, while other venues may prepare beans, vegetables, rice or coconut dishes. Ask for a complete main and confirm stock, fryer and garnish. A serious allergy needs a separate kitchen discussion.

Where can I drink alcohol?

Some hotel restaurants such as Moonrise, Peponi, Kijani and The Majlis serve alcohol according to current listings or first-party information. Confirm on the day and consume respectfully within the venue.

Is Koa Lamu recommended?

It has recent positive food reports, but three April and May 2026 reviewers alleged discriminatory or unequal service. This guide does not adjudicate those allegations or hide them. Read the original page and any management response before deciding.

How do I get back after dinner?

Use a boat known to the accommodation or restaurant. Agree the pickup jetty, time, fare, passenger count and weather fallback in advance, and carry a small light for the final walk.

Sources and visitor evidence

Current restaurant claims come from first-party or claimed pages for Kijani, Peponi, Lamu House/Moonrise, Jannat and Old Town context and The Majlis. Menus and hours must be rechecked because island supply and event schedules change.

Balanced visitor evidence comes from the directly linked restaurant pages for Seafront Cafe, Moonrise, Whispers, Peponi, Kijani, Koa and The Majlis.

Each review describes one meal or stay. It cannot establish tonight's menu, service, price or treatment. Older evidence is labelled as older, and serious allegations remain attributed rather than stated as fact.
