Kenyan Coast travel guide

Ultimate Kenyan Coast Itinerary: 7, 10 and 14 Days

For 7 days, combine Mombasa with either Diani or Watamu. For 10 days, use Mombasa, Diani and Watamu only if you accept one long coast-crossing day; otherwise stay on one side of Mombasa and add Kilifi. For 14 days, Diani, Mombasa, Watamu and Lamu can work when Lamu is connected by air and the flights are booked before the hotels. The most enjoyable route is not the one with the most pins.

This guide counts calendar days, including arrival and departure: seven days means six nights, ten days means nine nights, and fourteen days means thirteen nights. If your booking gives you seven, ten or fourteen nights, add the extra night to the main beach base rather than inventing another stop.

The day plans are frameworks, not packages. They leave weather space around marine trips, preserve one low-demand day after a transfer, and separate ideas from reservations. Current transport schedules, park rules and access must be confirmed with the operator.

Choose the right route first

Time available Best first-trip structure Nights What it preserves What it leaves out
7 days Mombasa + Diani 2 + 4 Old Town, Fort Jesus and a full south-coast beach stay Watamu, Kilifi and Lamu
7 days, north alternative Mombasa + Watamu 2 + 4 City history, marine park, Mida Creek and bays Diani and Lamu
10 days Mombasa + Diani + Watamu 2 + 3 + 4 One cultural base and both flagship mainland beach regions Kilifi overnight and Lamu
10 days, slower north Mombasa + Kilifi + Watamu 2 + 3 + 4 Shorter transfers, creek time and fewer rushed days Diani and Lamu
14 days Lamu + Watamu + Mombasa + Diani 3 + 4 + 2 + 4 Four genuinely different coastal experiences A slow Kilifi overnight
14 days, low-transfer Kilifi + Watamu + Mombasa + Diani 3 + 4 + 2 + 4 No Lamu flight dependency and more mainland time Lamu heritage and island pace

Do not use the 14-day route if those 14 days also include Nairobi and a safari. Use the separate safari and coast planning guide to divide the whole Kenya trip honestly.

The routing rule that prevents most mistakes

Pick one direction and minimise backtracking:

  • South finish: Lamu or Watamu first, then Mombasa, then Diani, with departure from Ukunda or Mombasa if the booked flight works.
  • North finish: Diani first, Mombasa in the middle, then Kilifi/Watamu, with departure from Malindi or Mombasa if the actual flight works.
  • Mombasa return: Keep the last night near the departure side when a very early flight or train makes the beach transfer risky.

Use the Kenya coast beaches map before buying anything. Diani is south of Mombasa; Watamu and Kilifi are north; Manda Airport is across the water from Lamu Old Town; and the Mombasa SGR terminus is at Miritini rather than beside the beach hotels.

Seven-day Kenyan coast itinerary: Mombasa and Diani

This is the strongest first-timer route for travellers who want Swahili history and a conventional beach holiday without living out of a suitcase.

Day Base Plan Why this pace works
1 Mombasa Arrive, transfer to the exact hotel and take only an easy neighbourhood walk or dinner International, domestic and SGR arrivals can all consume more of the day than expected
2 Mombasa Fort Jesus and a guided Old Town walk, then an early meal It concentrates the heritage sights while energy is highest
3 Diani Transfer south, check in and inspect the beach at the current tide The transfer is the main event; no prepaid boat excursion belongs here
4 Diani Full beach day, pool time and a short local meal This is recovery, not an “empty” day
5 Diani Choose one: Colobus Conservation, Kaya Kinondo, kitesurfing or another half-day activity One focused activity leaves weather and family flexibility
6 Diani Reserve for either a Wasini/Kisite marine day or a second slow beach day It avoids forcing a sea trip in unsuitable conditions
7 Departure Transfer to Ukunda, Mombasa or onward travel according to the ticket The final morning stays free of non-refundable touring

Day 1: arrive in Mombasa without pretending it is a sightseeing day

Confirm whether the ticket ends at Moi International Airport, Mombasa Terminus at Miritini, or another stop. Put the hotel name, final gate and fixed transfer price in writing. A “Mombasa” hotel can be on the island, at Nyali, Bamburi or Shanzu, each with a different arrival route.

If coming by SGR, use the current Kenya Railways passenger information and reporting rules rather than a timetable copied into a blog. The operator advises advance station arrival and sells tickets through its recognised channels. Schedule changes can make a perfectly written hour obsolete.

Day 2: Fort Jesus and Old Town

Visit Fort Jesus earlier, then continue through Old Town with a knowledgeable guide who can explain the lived-in neighbourhood rather than treating it as a film set. Dress respectfully, ask before photographing people and shops, and do not block entrances.

Use the Fort Jesus visitor guide and Mombasa Old Town walking guide to plan tickets, route, shade and guide questions. A city lunch is enough; a north-coast resort crawl adds traffic without improving the day.

Day 3: transfer to Diani

Do not promise a fixed driving time. The start side, Likoni traffic or bypass route, weather and final Diani gate all matter. Ask the driver which route is planned, whether ferry or tolls are included, how waiting is charged and where you will stop if travelling with children.

After check-in, learn the safe beach entrance, pool rules, restaurant options and tide pattern. Do not chase a sunset excursion after a delayed arrival.

Days 4 to 6: one beach day, one light activity and one flexible day

Keep one completely slow day. For the activity day, use Colobus Conservation or Kaya Kinondo for a land-based visit, or book a properly assessed kitesurfing lesson.

Wasini and Kisite-Mpunguti require a longer road-and-boat day. The Kenya Wildlife Service page identifies Shimoni as the mainland gateway and publishes current protected-area information. Confirm park fee, marine conditions, child lifejackets, boat licence, group size, food, toilet plan and what happens if the sea trip cannot run.

Day 7: depart with a real buffer

Do not place diving, a remote boat trip or a long lunch before a flight. The departure airport may be Ukunda, Mombasa or Nairobi after a train, and the correct buffer is different for each ticket. If the connection is on separate bookings, protect it more heavily.

Seven-day alternative: Mombasa and Watamu

Choose this route when reefs, Mida Creek, forest and smaller bays matter more than Diani's long resort strip.

Day Base Plan
1 Mombasa Arrival and easy evening
2 Mombasa Fort Jesus and Old Town
3 Watamu Road transfer, check-in and exact-bay orientation
4 Watamu Slow beach day scheduled around the tide
5 Watamu Marine park trip with a weather alternative
6 Watamu Mida Creek, Gede or Arabuko-Sokoke, not all three
7 Departure Malindi or Mombasa connection with a buffer

The KWS Watamu Marine National Park page places Watamu about 120 km north of Mombasa and explains the Gede turn-off. That is a useful planning scale, not a guaranteed transfer duration.

An April 2025 family report said a group boat's late departure reduced snorkelling time as the tide changed. It is one excursion, not a verdict on Watamu, but it supports asking the operator to distinguish meeting time, departure time and water time.

Ten-day Kenyan coast itinerary: Mombasa, Diani and Watamu

Ten days is the minimum at which both flagship mainland beach regions can feel intentional. It still contains one major repositioning day.

Day Sleep in Core plan Booking status
1 Mombasa Arrive and rest Transfer only
2 Mombasa Fort Jesus, Old Town and city meal Guide/ticket where needed
3 Diani Move south and settle in Private transfer or clearly documented connection
4 Diani Beach and pool Keep open
5 Diani One selected Diani or south-coast activity Flexible if weather-dependent
6 Watamu Long transfer north through the Mombasa corridor Treat as travel, not sightseeing
7 Watamu Slow beach and bay orientation Keep open
8 Watamu Marine park or diving day Reserve with weather terms
9 Watamu Choose Mida Creek, Gede or Arabuko-Sokoke Reserve only what capacity requires
10 Departure Leave from Malindi or connect via Mombasa/Nairobi Ticket controls the buffer

The difficult day is Diani to Watamu

This is not a relaxed beach hop. The route crosses the south-coast approach, Mombasa traffic and the northbound corridor before the Watamu turn-off. A cheap quote can become poor value if it means vehicle changes, indefinite waits or collecting multiple guests.

Ask for:

  1. Door-to-door or meeting-point service.
  2. Private or shared vehicle.
  3. Maximum passengers and luggage.
  4. Planned route and realistic stop policy.
  5. Air-conditioning and seatbelts.
  6. Total price, including parking, ferry or toll costs if applicable.
  7. The response to a breakdown or serious delay.

Do not add Haller Park, a Mombasa lunch and a hotel inspection to this day. Seeing attractions through a vehicle window is not a bonus itinerary.

Watamu deserves three usable days

Watamu's bays change with tide. Use the first afternoon to identify the exact beach and the second full day for the most weather-dependent activity. Keep the third usable day for Mida Creek, Gede or Arabuko-Sokoke depending on interest.

The best things to do in Watamu guide compares these choices. The Watamu weather guide helps choose a broad season, but the operator's marine decision must use the actual forecast, wind, swell and tide.

Slower ten-day alternative: Mombasa, Kilifi and Watamu

Skip Diani if creek time, quiet beaches and short north-coast connections matter more than checking both famous resort regions.

Days Nights Base Use the time for
1 to 3 2 Mombasa Arrival, Fort Jesus, Old Town and one north-coast beach or Haller Park choice
3 to 6 3 Kilifi Creek activity, Bofa Beach, one slow day and a planned restaurant
6 to 10 4 Watamu Beach, marine park and one nature/heritage day

Kilifi is not a miniature Watamu. Stay for the creek, Bofa and slower social rhythm. Use things to do in Kilifi and Kilifi restaurants to decide whether those differences justify changing hotels.

Fourteen-day Kenyan coast itinerary: Lamu to Diani

Fourteen days can support four bases if the Lamu flight connects sensibly. The route below starts in Lamu and moves south, but only after the air sectors and current travel advice are confirmed.

Day Base Plan Protect against
1 Lamu/Shela Fly to Manda, pre-arranged boat, settle in Missed last transfer and luggage confusion
2 Lamu/Shela Guided Old Town orientation Heat, worship times and intrusive photography
3 Lamu/Shela Shela beach and village Tide, sun and overlong exposed walking
4 Lamu/Shela Dhow sail or open island day Wind, boat condition and unclear return
5 Watamu Boat to airport, flight connection, road to exact Watamu property Assuming a direct flight that does not operate on the booked date
6 Watamu Beach and rest Over-scheduling after two transfers
7 Watamu Marine park Weather, tide and boat-group delays
8 Watamu Mida Creek, Gede or Arabuko-Sokoke Combining distant activities into a checklist
9 Mombasa Road to Mombasa, easy evening Turning the move into a full sightseeing day
10 Mombasa Fort Jesus and Old Town Heat and city traffic
11 Diani Move south and settle in A fixed-time excursion after arrival
12 Diani Full beach day Filling the recovery day with paid activities
13 Diani Colobus, Kaya Kinondo, kitesurfing or another chosen activity Booking incompatible activities for one day
14 Departure Transfer according to the ticket Underestimating Ukunda, Mombasa or Nairobi connection time

Lamu belongs only after the flight test

Search the actual date and direction before reserving non-refundable Lamu and Watamu rooms. A map or old itinerary may show a direct Malindi, Mombasa or Lamu connection that does not operate daily, seasonally or in the required direction. If the flight creates a long Nairobi connection, the four-base route may no longer be sensible.

Flights arrive at Manda Airport, followed by a boat to Lamu Old Town, Shela or another property. Put the boat operator, fare, luggage allowance, meeting point and response to a late flight in writing.

Read the current UK Kenya travel advice and current US Kenya travel advisory as examples of why nationality matters. Their Lamu boundaries and recommendations differ. Use your own government's advice and insurer wording; do not treat a blog route as safety clearance.

Lamu needs cultural pacing

UNESCO describes Lamu Old Town as a living Swahili settlement. One guided half-day helps a visitor understand streets, mosques, courtyards and seafront life. It is not permission to photograph residents without consent or treat religious and domestic spaces as props.

Keep a full Shela day. An August 2025 couple praised the no-car atmosphere, dhow trips, breeze and beach. A December 2024 couple liked Shela but said sandflies affected their stay. Those reports support realistic packing and property questions, not a promise about every visit.

Fourteen-day mainland alternative

Replace Lamu with three Kilifi nights when flights, advice, budget or mobility make island logistics unattractive:

  1. Kilifi for three nights.
  2. Watamu for four nights.
  3. Mombasa for two nights.
  4. Diani for four nights.

This keeps four bases but removes two airport/boat chains. It is often the stronger family route because a disrupted domestic flight does not destabilise the rest of the coast itinerary.

Transport comparison by itinerary role

Mode Best use Hidden cost or risk Verification
Domestic flight Nairobi to coast, Lamu/Manda, or avoiding a long reposition Baggage limits, airport transfer, schedule change and separate-ticket risk Book from the operating airline and recheck the sector
SGR Nairobi to Mombasa, or a coast leg combined with Tsavo/Voi Nairobi and Mombasa stations both require last-mile transport Use Kenya Railways' official booking and schedule
Private road transfer Diani, Mombasa, Kilifi, Watamu and Malindi door to door Price, traffic, vehicle quality and driver hours Confirm vehicle, inclusions, route and receipt
Shared shuttle or bus Budget movement between major towns Collection time, changes, luggage and final hotel distance Obtain exact company, stop and arrival procedure
Tuk-tuk or local taxi Short movement within one base Night availability, luggage capacity and weather exposure Agree destination and fare before moving
Boat Lamu airport transfer, island stay, creek restaurant or marine trip Tide, sea state, lifejackets, luggage and last return Confirm operator, boat, weather policy and pickup pin

Build a costed itinerary without inventing a budget

A useful budget must use your dates, room and traveller category. Price the trip in this order:

Budget block Quantity in 7 days Quantity in 10 days Quantity in 14 days
Accommodation nights 6 9 13
Major inter-base movements 1 2 3, plus Lamu flight/boat if chosen
Airport or station transfers 2 or more 2 or more 4 or more with Lamu
Full paid activity days 1 to 2 2 to 3 3 to 5
Slow or self-directed days 2 3 4 to 5
Contingency At least one meaningful reserve Reserve for transfer and marine changes Reserve for flight, boat and route changes

Then obtain the final price for tax, meals, park entry, boat, equipment, guide, transport, child policy and cancellation. Do not compare a hotel breakfast rate with full board, or a tour headline that excludes non-resident park entry with one that includes it.

Booking order

  1. International arrival and departure points.
  2. Any Lamu or other schedule-limited domestic flight.
  3. First and last hotel, with cancellation terms.
  4. Remaining hotels on the locked route.
  5. Major inter-base transfers.
  6. One capacity-limited or priority activity per base.
  7. Restaurant reservations and flexible extras.

Do not prepay every day. Weather, fatigue and a beach worth enjoying are legitimate reasons to change the plan.

Families, older travellers and mobility needs

For families, every third day should be low-demand. A 2026 traveller discussing a ten-day Kenya trip with a baby was advised not to make the itinerary a rush; the advice is anecdotal, but the planning principle is sound. Children do not experience a vehicle transfer as rest.

Before booking, ask about:

  • Child seats in every road vehicle.
  • Correct-size lifejackets for every boat.
  • Wet or dry boarding and the number of jetty steps.
  • Family room occupancy and whether a “child” age limit matches the traveller.
  • Shade, toilets and meal timing on long excursions.
  • Refrigerator access for medicine or food.
  • Walking surface in Old Town, on sand and at heritage sites.
  • The response if one family member skips an activity.

For older travellers or reduced mobility, fewer bases usually create more value than a nominally comprehensive route. Ask the property for recent photographs or measurements of essential access features.

Visitor reality checks

Traveller report What it usefully shows What it cannot prove
June 2026 solo traveller spent four of an eleven-day Kenya trip in Diani and described the trip positively Four coast days can feel substantial after faster travel That Diani is the right coast base for every solo traveller
August 2025 Shela couple praised no cars, beach and dhow time Lamu offers a genuinely different rhythm That the flight, boat and current advice work for your date
April 2025 Watamu family lost snorkelling time after a delayed shared departure Tide-dependent trips need an operational plan That all Watamu operators delay
August 2026 Diani visitor found low-tide hazards and vendor approaches intrusive Exact tide and beach behaviour affect the day That all Diani sections or seasons are identical
August 2026 solo-itinerary discussion advised a seven-day visitor to choose Mombasa/Nyali or Diani rather than the whole country Aggressive itineraries can destroy usable time That one Reddit comment should select the route

Use reviews to identify a question, then verify current conditions with the relevant operator or official source.

Common itinerary mistakes

  • Saying “7 days” without defining whether that means six or seven nights.
  • Counting arrival, departure and a long transfer as full activity days.
  • Trying to combine Diani, Watamu and Lamu in one week.
  • Adding Lamu before confirming the actual flight direction and advisory.
  • Crossing from Diani to Watamu and calling it a sightseeing day.
  • Booking every marine activity on consecutive days with no weather alternative.
  • Treating beach rest as wasted time.
  • Booking a hotel from the destination centre rather than its exact gate.
  • Assuming Mombasa Airport, Mombasa Island and Mombasa Terminus are beside one another.
  • Reserving the table but not the return boat or night driver.
  • Using non-refundable hotels before schedule-limited transport is confirmed.
  • Buying a tour from a changed payment account without independent verification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Diani, Watamu and Lamu in seven days?

You can move through them, but you will not have seven useful beach days. Choose Diani or Watamu with Mombasa. Add Lamu only when the trip is longer and the flight makes sense.

Is ten days enough for the Kenyan coast?

Yes. Mombasa, Diani and Watamu fit if you accept a long transfer day. Mombasa, Kilifi and Watamu create a slower north-coast route. Lamu makes ten days much more flight-dependent and leaves little recovery time.

Is fourteen days too long for the coast?

No. Four bases can work, or three bases can create a deeper trip. Beach, marine, heritage and creek days are different. The danger is filling every day with a departure rather than running out of things to do.

Should I visit Diani or Watamu?

Choose Diani for a long full-service resort corridor, broad restaurant choice and south-coast access. Choose Watamu for multiple bays, reef activities, Mida Creek, Gede and forest access. Both are tidal; neither is the universal winner.

Should Mombasa be a day trip or an overnight?

Two nights make Fort Jesus and Old Town easier around arrival or a coast crossing. A day trip from Diani or Watamu can work, but traffic turns it into a longer day and makes a skilled route plan more important.

Should I finish at the beach?

Usually, especially after a safari or city segment. But finish near the transport that protects the final international ticket. A last beach night is not relaxing if it creates an unsafe connection.

Can I use buses along the coast?

Intercity buses and shuttles can reduce cost, but the product varies. Confirm the operator, exact terminal, scheduled time, luggage policy, seatbelt, intermediate collections and last-mile hotel transfer. A “Mombasa to Malindi” ticket does not deliver you to a Watamu beach gate.

How far ahead should I book?

Secure festive dates, major festivals, scarce family rooms and Lamu flights earlier. Preserve flexibility for marine activities. The correct balance depends on cancellation terms, not a universal month count.

Sources and visitor evidence

Coast geography and protected-area planning come from the National Tourism Service coastal circuit, Kenya Wildlife Service Watamu page, Kisite-Mpunguti page and UNESCO Lamu Old Town listing. Rail planning uses Kenya Railways services and its passenger FAQ, not a copied permanent timetable.

Current advisory examples are the official UK Kenya travel advice and US Kenya travel advisory. Visitors must check the authority relevant to their nationality and insurance.

Dated experience evidence comes from the individual visitor pages for Diani Beach, Watamu Beach and Shela Beach, plus a June 2026 eleven-day solo trip report and an August 2026 short-itinerary discussion. These reports inform pacing questions, not current transport, safety or quality guarantees.
